Aranđelovac, 26 October – The first training event for public policy dialogue, entitled ‘Introduction to successful policy dialogue: Policymaking, inter-institutional co-operation, advocacy, and lobbying’, was held on 26 October in Aranđelovac. In addition to representatives of partner local governments, Vranje, Osečina, Sremska Mitrovica, and Užice, the workshop was attended by officers of the National Public Policy Secretariat, Fiscal Council, and Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities. RELOF Experts Panagiotis Karkatsoulis and Duško Krsmanović devoted the one-day training session to the importance and components of well-argued, participatory, and flexible public dialogue, and presented the concepts and benefits of stimulating public dialogue for local and national authorities. They also introduced the participants to steps in initiating and managing public dialogue that influences decision-making.
‘This is the first in a line of training events designed to build our local partners’ capacities for managing the public policy process. Attendance at the event by national-level officials bears out both the significance of this topic and the need to enhance policy dialogue, an issue that RELOF has recognised’, said Ana Jolović, RELOF Team Leader.
The participants found it particularly significant to learn about actual examples of the policymaking process and its management from global, regional, and national practice, as well as about evidence-based policies and dialogue. The discussion and exchange of experiences focused on a number of models for collaboration between institutions, including various practices and techniques in connection with the legal, economic, and political aspects of lobbying and advocacy. The participants rated the workshop highly, and agreed for a follow-up session to be held in early 2018.
